The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority’s (DEWA) Green Hydrogen project has crossed a major milestone, producing more than 100 tonnes of green hydrogen since operations began in May 2021. According to DEWA’s managing director and chief executive officer, Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, most of this hydrogen has been used to generate over 1.15 gigawatt hours (GWh) of clean electricity through a hydrogen gas engine, which helped avoid more than 515 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions.

A portion of the hydrogen, more than 11 tonnes, has also been supplied to the Emirates National Oil Company (ENOC). The company used it to fuel hydrogen vehicles at the Service Station of the Future at Expo 2020 Dubai and for other industrial purposes. The project is part of wider national and local decarbonisation plans, including the UAE’s Net Zero 2050 Strategy, the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050, the Dubai Net Zero Carbon Emissions Strategy 2050, and the Dubai Green Mobility Strategy 2030. Together, these plans aim to increase the use of sustainable energy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions across multiple sectors.

The facility, the first of its kind in the Middle East and North Africa, was developed in collaboration with Expo 2020 Dubai and Siemens Energy. It uses solar power to produce green hydrogen and has a capacity of around 20 kilogrammes per hour. A dedicated storage tank allows for up to 12 hours of hydrogen storage, enabling round-the-clock availability. The stored hydrogen can be converted into electricity through a hydrogen gas motor, which has an output of approximately 300 kilowatts.

Beyond its immediate production and storage capabilities, the project has been designed to support future applications of hydrogen across multiple sectors. Energy generation, industrial use, and transport are seen as key areas where hydrogen can help accelerate the shift towards low-carbon systems. In particular, hydrogen-powered vehicles and industrial processes are expected to play a role in reducing emissions from sectors that are harder to decarbonise.

Industry reports have highlighted the UAE’s positioning in the global hydrogen economy. The Green Hydrogen Report 2024 by Alvarez & Marsal ranks the UAE first in terms of competitiveness in green hydrogen, citing projects such as DEWA’s as key examples of progress. Analysts note that early pilot-scale projects are vital for demonstrating technical feasibility, testing business models, and building confidence for larger-scale deployments in the coming years.
